UMUT YAMAC - DESIGNER - LONDON

Umut Yamac (Born 1980, London)

Umut Yamac is a London based architect and designer with Turkish heritage. He graduated from the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL with a distinction in design and went on to work for a number of internationally renowned architects and designers before establishing his own practice in 2011.

He works on a diverse range of projects from the scale of the object to the architectural. The common thread that unites each piece is the emphasis placed on the relationship with the user; and the desire to offer different levels of engagement, from purely functional to the playful and imaginary.

Bloom, 2017
Material: Synthetic paper, brass, steel
Dimensions: 1550 x 450 x 200mm

Bloom takes inspiration from a blossoming flower, moving its head to follow the light throughout the day. In this case the origami flower is illuminated and acts a sail, becoming animated by the motion of a passerby.

Poise Light, 2016
Material: Paper, brass, gold plated steel, cork
Dimensions: 1300 x 450 x 500mm

The Poise Light is a majestic bird of prey captured mid-flight and delicately balanced just on the tip of its beak. Reminiscent of a balancing bird toy, the origami and brass light is able to move freely about its beak when activated by gentle touch or a breeze, whilst remaining illuminated.

Perch Light for Moooi, 2016
Material: Synthetic paper, brass, steel

A family of six sculptural lamps celebrate the beauty and poetry of a bird perched on a branch, rocking darkness away when set in motion. Crafted from paper in the form of an abstract bird sitting on a branch, these sunlit birds are free to swing when softly touched, gently glowing and bringing along the promise of spring.

The Perch Light family for Moooi launched at Salone del Mobile, Milan in 2016.

Perch Light, 2014
Edition of 20 + 2 AP
Material: Paper, brass, gold plated steel, cork
Dimensions: Floor standing 1250 x 200mm, Wall mounted 500 x 350mm

The Perch Light is a balancing sculptural light made of folded paper and brass. The lamp takes the form of an abstract bird which appears to be delicately balanced on its metal perch. The bird is illuminated through contact with the perch and this lets the bird balance and swing without any cables whilst maintaining luminance. The design was inspired by nature and in particular, the elegance and beauty of a bird sitting on its perch.

The bird has been precisely counterbalanced to sit in a resting position on its perch unless activated into gentle motion by wind or touch.

Cage Clock, 2010
Material: Brass, Walnut, acrylic, liquid gold leaf, clock mechanism
Dimensions: Floor standing 1200 x 600mm, Table 600 x 600mm

The Cage Clock combines the functions of a clock and a lampshade. The external structure is based on an extruded clock dial, composed of 24 fins that correspond to 30 minute time intervals. Internally, the cage structure creates an enclosure for a light fitting and clock hands. For these, conventional clock hands are re-imagined as two birds, which circle within the cage. The time is read by the position of the birds in relation to the fins.

Roller Clock, 2010
Material: Brass, acrylic, paper, clock mechanism
Dimensions: Floor standing 950 x 200mm, Table 200 x 200mm

The Roller Clock combines the functions of a clock and a lamp. As a clock, it explores a new way of describing and reading the movement of time in space. As a lamp, the light source is shaded by a cylindrical clock dial, which, in contrast to a 2-D dial, rotates in relation to a fixed reading bar.
